What is EPD certification and why it is important?

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that quantifies the environmental impact of a product or service along all its life cycle and communicates it in a transparent and comparable way, facilitating comparison between products fulfilling the same function.

The impact of a product is measured by means of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, an objective procedure which takes into account all the inputs and outputs associated with its life cycle, from raw materials extraction to the reuse, recycling or disposal of final waste.

For Syngenta Biologicals, the EPD certification implements our concrete commitment to creating a sustainable future for people and nature. We believe that our goal of a more sustainable agricultural production while retaining quality and quantity can be reached only by making every single link of the value chain sustainable, starting by our own solutions. That is why the EPD certification is important to us: not only it communicates in a clear and objective way the impact of our products, but also allows us to gain deeper understanding of our environmental performances with the aim of continuous improvement.

Syngenta Biologicals' commitment to sustainability: a journey started with our legacy company Valagro

The EPD certification continues the Syngenta Biologicals' journey to sustainability, whose first steps trace back the initiatives carried out by our legacy company, Valagro, since the 1990's. For us, care of the environment, product quality and workers’ health and safety are pivotal concepts, and the certifications obtained by our historical Atessa plant testifies to our commitment through time:

  • At the end of the 1990s, Valagro obtained the ISO 14001 environmental certification, the international standard certifying a management system that monitors the environmental impacts of its activities, and the ISO 9001 quality system certification, attesting the adoption of business processes aimed at improving effectiveness and efficiency of the organization and customer satisfaction. Years later, also traceability was implemented.
  • In 2007, Valagro obtained the ISO 45001 certification, the international standard that establishes the requirements of a management system to protect the safety and health of workers. Since then, the attention to safety has been continuously improved by the continuous training of all the staff.
  • In 2022, Valagro has obtained the certification of the EPD elaboration process for the Atessa plant. This will allow us to obtain and certify Environmental Product Declarations for all our products autonomously. Moreover, Valagro published the Environmental Product Declaration for 4 flagship products of its portfolio.
  • In 2023, Valagro has extended the EPD process certification to its plants in India and Brazil and published the certification for 15 more products.
  • Today, our commitment continues as Syngenta Biologicals with the progressive expansion of EPD certification to the other products of our portfolio
